ECOART—what is it and why do we need it in South Florida?
The only permanent ecoart project in South Florida so far is in West Palm Beach’s Dreher Park. For the past year, a community action group, the Friends of Elders’ Cove has led efforts to restore the work (finished in 2004) that has suffered from hurricane damage and poor maintenance practices. Come see the progress made to date on restoring this innovative art work that demonstrates stormwater cleaning through natural and aesthetically interesting means. Our meeting on November 10th will convene at 5:30 PM at the Elders’ Cove ecoart site, at the extreme Northern end of Dreher Park (directions below). Mary Jo Aagerstoun and Lucy Keshavarz, co-chairs of the Friends of Elders’ Cove, will tour the site with us. Afterward, we will move to the West Palm Beach Garden Club House, adjacent to the Science Museum, also in Dreher Park, where Mary Jo, who founded the South Florida Environmental Art Project, Inc. (www.sfeap.org) in early 2007, will give us a brief overview of what ecoart IS and also what it IS NOT, and share the goals of SFEAP to catalyze the development of South Florida as a center for ecoart.
Directions to Elders’ Cove, Dreher Park: From I-95, take Southern Avenue exit, East. Turn right at Parker Avenue. Turn right at Summit Avenue and go to entrance to Dreher Park where the signs for the Zoo and Science Museum are. Follow the road past the Zoo and Museum, all the way to the end.
