AMY MILLER
Artistic statement pertaining to FOSSILS
A fossil is the remains of a life after it has lived.
My paintings are the archeology of the self, uncovering the psyche and employing creative endeavors that we, as humans, use to expose or hide ourselves.
Color and movement are my platform for expressing my interior ruminations on living. They pertain to all humans as we strive for self-awareness and look for meaning in our lives.
In this work, I employ pen-and-ink forms to create shapes rather than words, allowing them to be interpreted by viewers worldwide without knowledge of language. This stands for the element of communication.
Incorporating the medium of nail enamels, I have deconstructed them to form the visual vocabulary of shape and form which sit on the surface of the painting, like jewels from the earth, much as a geological dig would produce. They are the embodiment of physical and psychological energy, which we all contain and which gives us our personal power.
Fluid oil colors embrace my own spiritual energy and a reflection of nature, which has informed my connection to myself and the world around me.ALL colors can be found in the natural world.
The metallic qualities of the painting are reflections on the grandeur of being human, of our intellectual, physical and intuitive powers. They are the acknowledgment of all the gifts that such a position brings in our existence on the planet, but also the responsibility that it creates.
These paintings are an exploration of What Lies Beneath The Superficial Self...
Our joys, our fears, our love of beauty, our personal concerns, our abilities to think, create and invent.
