MARIA MIELE

Miele  Artist Statement and Biography

Maria’s work is rooted in the tradition of American Modernism. Subjects reflect the tension between harmony, memory, and modern life. Maria works between painting and photography, allowing each medium to inform the other in form, feeling, and structure.

Her paintings explore impressionistic renderings that feel familiar, fleeting scenes that evoke nostalgia and commentary. These moments are layered with abstraction and expressive gestures that speak to a deeper emotional and environmental undercurrent. The bushwork often merges Abstract Expressionism, creating a visual dialogue between spontaneity and intention.

Fluidly, she shifts her lens to the still, often overlooked aspects of our surroundings. Across all of her work, her aim is to capture a sense of place and feeling that is both personal and collective. Whether it’s the forgotten relics of the road or the fading industry of coastal life, my goal is to reflect the modern American experience—fragmented, beautiful, raw, and deeply human.

Maria is an award winning contemporary artist focusing on American Modernism with a traditionally trained background. She received a BFA in painting and photography from Caldwell University and an MA in Arts Administration from NYU. Maria taught fine art for all levels of students from Elementary to college with the last 13 years of her career at the high school level. During the time teaching Maria maintained a professional art career showing periodically throughout Florida and Miami. Attending Spectrum Miami during Miami art week in 2016 marked the fast forward into full time studio artist. She is currently an active member of several Arts guilds, Maria shows in Stuart on a bi monthly basis and with the West Hartford Arts League in CT and will be showing in Miami with the Galeria Azur. Her most recent award was for 1st place in Raw photography at the A.E.Backus Museum in 2025.

Maria has maintained her connection to the community through volunteering in the arts, and as an acting liaison between the arts community and the schools in which she worked. Maria has served on several boards including the MartinArts board and currently the gallery committee of MartinArts where she helps curate and volunteers to keep the galleries vibrant.
