DIANE HODGES
Artist Statement
I have found in art as is true in life, we are drawn and inspired by those things that inherently and deeply touch us. And for me, that evolves around nature and horses and art.
In Ohio, I live in a wooded landscape and so all I have to do is go out my back door to find materials for my horses. I gather maple and ash branches, grapevine and old English ivy. In Florida, I use banyan, English Oak, and some conifer branches in making my sculptures. To create a horse, I begin by finding interesting branches and materials that are shaped and contorted in certain ways that might be a leg or neck or shoulder. Sometimes I use bark, wood from my arena floor, or fragments from the wood that speak to me. I then begin sculpturing the form much like a gesture drawing and use an epoxy to make sure the branches and vines are secure. The horses are secured onto aged fence board from my pastures.
In each horse sculpture, I try to embrace the essence of a horse’s form, movement and beauty. I truly believe making these stick horses is something that can’t be taught but rather innately created from deep within.
